The goal of this project was to propose the development of a food pop-up in a low-income London neighborhood to combat food insecurity and foster community across cultures. This was created in my study abroad program, Design in Britain 2022. In my team of four, we created the concept of a free pop-up food market resembling a home structure that would be available to anyone in need of ingredients. Islington, the neighborhood we designed this for, is composed of people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. We interviewed several people in this neighborhood and discovered that ingredients to make many of their cultures’ dishes were difficult to find and access. The concept of our pop up is to provide people access to unique ingredients as well create a space where the community can come together and share recipes from their cultures. Exploring the concept of home in a place far away from mine was a touching experience. Hearing directly from the residents of Islington provided me with a diverse and multi-dimensional experience of London and what food can mean to people.
